It must have come from somewhere.... anyone know the history? So far, this is what I found:
Punk first emerging in the mid 1970s in London, Punk arrived as an anarchic and aggressive movement. They would cut up old clothes from thrift shops. Then they would destroy the fabric and would refashioned outfits in a crude construction technique. The purpose of which was to make garments designed to attract attention. As a style, Punk succeeded to move main stream when Vivienne Westwood styles were worn on bands like The Exploited. Punk fashion has influenced the styles of other groups. Punk fashion has refused to be excluded from pop fashion since its inception. Punk fashion took the skeletons out of society’s closet and shoved these in its face. It was dangerous, chaotic, and completely out of sync with society’s standards.
Punks appeared with tattoos on faces, hands, arms, forearms, backs, chests, rear ends, calves, even the oddest places, like on the inside of lips and more delicate, unmentionable body areas. Punk is an attitude, about making your own mark against the establishment. Understandably, “punk” is discouraged by conventional society. Punks have used safety pins and razor blades as jewelry, including using safety pins for piercings.
Historically, Punk came about as a response to the "push-button" culture that originated in the 1950s, a culture that sprung up with much help from the United States' emerging "Super-power" status. Punks dressed like they did because punks felt that punks were the only people with whom each other could sympathize about the wrongness of the main-stream.
Can anyone add to this?
