The basic feeling of Goth style is morbid romanticism. Different types of Goths may be more on the morbid or romantic side, but they're all a little of both. In my area, Goth style has been fazing out in recent years, because the financial basis for romantic ideals is evaporating, and the morbidity is just too real. I personally hope to benefit from America's demise, so I can adopt Goth style as a way of life. (I'm a Soft Goth myself). Don't ever tell anyone this in defense of your Gothic fashion, but do keep it in mind.
